Introducing OT at Tightrope Learning

Occupational Therapy (OT) at Tightrope Learning supports children’s development during the critical early years. With increasing wait times and barriers to accessing therapy services, this integrated school readiness program provides families with timely, targeted support to build the foundational skills children need to thrive at school.

OT focuses on the skills that underpin learning and participation, including motor development, emotional regulation, attention and behaviour, movement and coordination, play skills, and independence across activities of daily living. By addressing these areas early, children are better supported to engage confidently in classroom routines, peer interactions, and everyday school activities.

Within Tightrope Learning, OTs work collaboratively with educators and families to identify each child’s developmental needs and provide targeted, evidence-based intervention that complements educational learning.

What are we focusing on through our support?

  • Readiness for tabletop and classroom tasks, including tracing, cutting, pencil control and pressure, letter formation, drawing, and colouring

  • Emotional regulation and sustained attention

  • Confidence in social play and peer relationships

  • Independence with daily routines and self-care skills

  • Understanding and supporting sensory processing differences

Early intervention through OT helps children build strong developmental foundations, supporting smoother transitions into school and promoting ongoing participation, confidence, and success in learning.

Does my child need occupational therapy?

As parents, you know your child best. Sometimes there’s a quiet feeling that something is just a little harder for them than it should be - even though they’re bright, capable, and trying their best.

Occupational Therapy (OT) supports the foundational skills that sit underneath learning, confidence, independence, and participation in everyday life.

Your child may benefit from OT support if you’ve noticed challenges with:

Fine Motor Skills

  • Pencil grip and hand strength

  • Cutting, drawing, or correct letter formation

  • Fatigue during pencil-and-paper tasks

  • Avoiding colouring or writing activities

Gross Motor Skills

  • Balance and coordination

  • Climbing, jumping, or playground equipment

  • Ball skills

  • Appearing clumsy or less confident with movement

Emotional Regulation & Transitions

  • Big emotions that feel hard to manage

  • Difficulty transitioning between activities

  • Frustration when tasks feel tricky

  • Challenges with attention and focus

Social & Play Skills

  • Sharing and turn-taking

  • Joining in group play

  • Forming and maintaining friendships

  • Limited imaginative or flexible play

Sensory Processing

  • Sensitivities to food textures

  • Discomfort with certain clothing

  • Avoidance of messy play

  • Strong reactions to noise, touch, or movement

Importantly, children do not need a diagnosis to access Occupational Therapy. Many children benefit from support before concerns become bigger challenges. Early intervention builds confidence, resilience, and readiness for school and beyond.

At Tightrope Learning, we focus on strengthening foundations - gently, playfully, and with purpose.

Occupational Therapy at Tightrope Learning

What’s Involved in our OT Program?

We’ve designed our Occupational Therapy pathway to feel supportive, clear, and collaborative for families.

1. Initial Occupational Therapy Assessment

We begin with a comprehensive 2–3 hour assessment session in a calm, child-friendly environment.

This includes:

  • Developmental screening across key domains

  • Play-based assessment of fine motor, gross motor, regulation, and social skills

  • Observation within meaningful activities

  • A detailed parent discussion to understand your concerns, your child’s strengths, and your goals

Our approach is warm and strengths-based. We’re not just identifying challenges - we’re understanding your whole child.

2. Reporting & Individualised Planning

Following the assessment, you will receive:

  • A clear, easy-to-understand written summary report

  • An individualised therapy plan with meaningful, measurable goals and milestones

  • Practical strategies you can use immediately at home

  • Recommendations for support within the Tightrope Learning environment

We take the time to explain findings carefully so you feel informed, reassured, and confident in the next steps.

3. Ongoing Therapy & Collaboration

If ongoing support is recommended, therapy is delivered in structured blocks tailored to your child’s needs.

Sessions are:

  • Goal-directed and evidence-informed

  • Play-based and engaging

  • Focused on building school readiness skills

  • Designed to strengthen confidence and independence

A unique strength of our program is collaboration. Our Occupational Therapists work closely with:

  • Tightrope Learning educators

  • Families

  • Physiotherapists (where appropriate)

  • Other professionals involved in your child’s care

This ensures strategies are consistent across environments and progress feels meaningful - not isolated to a single therapy room.

Our Philosophy

Many developmental challenges are subtle. Children often cope beautifully in early years, but as school demands increase - sitting for longer, writing more, navigating friendships - small gaps in foundation skills can become more noticeable.

By strengthening these foundations early, we help children:

  1. Feel capable instead of overwhelmed

  2. Build resilience instead of frustration

  3. Develop confidence that carries into school and life

At Tightrope Learning, our team combines clinical expertise with a nurturing, relationship-based approach. We understand how vulnerable it can feel to seek support, and we are committed to walking alongside families with care, clarity, and confidence.

If you’re wondering whether Occupational Therapy might help your child, we welcome you to reach out for a conversation with Elly, our therapist. Sometimes reassurance is all that’s needed. And sometimes early support makes all the difference.
