Starting pre-school is a big milestone for your child – and for you! At Tightrope Learning, we know how important it is to make that first day a positive and confident step in your child’s early learning journey. Here are our top tips to help ease the transition and build excitement.
1. Talk About What to Expect
Start preparing your child emotionally by talking about what pre-school is like. Use positive language and talk about the fun activities, new friends, and caring educators they’ll meet. Read books together about starting pre-school and answer any questions they have with warmth and honesty.
2. Practice the Routine
School readiness includes being prepared for a structured day. In the lead-up to their first day, start adjusting your child’s morning and evening routines to match the pre-school schedule. Practice packing a bag, putting on shoes, and saying goodbye.
3. Visit the Classroom
If possible, visit Tightrope Learning before your child's start date. Seeing the space, meeting educators, and even playing for a little while can help your child feel more secure and familiar on day one.
4. Label Everything
From backpacks to water bottles, clear labelling helps both educators and children keep track of their belongings and builds independence.
5. Keep Goodbyes Short and Sweet
Saying goodbye on that first day can be emotional, but try to keep it positive and reassuring. A quick hug, a smile, and a confident “I’ll see you soon!” helps your child feel safe.
6. Trust the Process
Tightrope Learning’s passionate educators are experts at supporting your child’s early learning and emotional wellbeing. Separation anxiety is normal, but our experience and nurturing environment help ease the transition for both children and parents.
